What is a colt SP1 AR-15?

The Colt SP1 shown here is one of the earliest available AR-15 rifles offered to the general public on a wide scale. Colt took two directions in marketing this rifle: As this was an era where gun ownership was typically equated with hunting, the rifle was marketed to private citizens as a lightweight, space age sporting arm.

Why did colt put the upper receiver on the SP1?

It is unknown why this is so, but there are two prevailing theories: The first is that the US Army asked Colt to do this in order to prevent soldiers from stealing upper receivers and using them on privately owned SP1s or vice versa.

Why is a colt SP1 called a “pencil barrel”?

The other is that Colt did this as a form of intellectual property protection, so that another company’s upper receiver wouldn’t work on a Colt SP1 lower. The reason why it’s called “pencil barrel” and “birdcage”. (Photo: Francis Borek)

What kind of barrel does a Sp1 have?

The SP1 is chambered for 5.56 or 223 and has a 20 inch barrel, it’s a pencil weight barrel. It’s a very lightweight barrel and it has a one-in-12-inch twist. These guns are really, you know—cool guns.
